“A Model of Christian Charity” is Winthrop’s thesis that is made arguments of love and relationships and based off the King James text. Winthrop seems as a calm and understanding man who clearly states his proposal through “what if’s” and defining information that answers those “what if’s”. Winthrop defines the how the Law of Nature and the Law of Grace explains how we are supposed to treat and love one another. Winthrop makes it very clear that in order for this to work then one must love his neighbor as himself. In order to love your neighbor as yourself you have to also have to help men in their time of want and distress and also do as every man should do.- From this passage I think that it is clear that Winthrop finds in very important to follow these certain steps before you can ever have love for someone. I find it very important to have and be able to show love to a person because in return you want the same thing.
Winthrop’s define loves the say way that scripture does; Love is the bond of perfection. With this it means that love is first the bond or ligament that creates loves, secondly it is what makes things work perfectly or beyond perfection. Winthrop states that in order for love to work we must want to take all part of the united body- being everyone that is saved- so that we can create a special relationship that partakes of each other’s strength and infirmity, joy and sorrow. Overall the love that we are trying to obtain comes from God so that means we must be one of God to actually obtain it.  I think that Winthrop meaning for how we can bring the Puritans in the New World together is   by knitting the two together and becoming one, so that they will rejoice together, mourn together, work together and overall be one with each other.
Thoreau’s “Resistance to Civil Government” expresses his attitude and thought towards making individuals pay taxes with they didn’t support the government in their actions. Thoreau’s main request is that people sand up for what they believe in and let their voice be known so that they are constantly being trampled over by “higher –ups” who don’t care what they want. I think that Thoreau find it hard to believe that many people disagree with the actions that are being taken upon things they don’t approve of but they continue to pay taxes and support their government in which they don’t agree with. He basically wants people to be able to put themselves first and do what they want instead of having other people make decisions for them.
The moral of these two articles was that we should base our lives off of love and treating each other fairly. I think this plays an important role in our lives because without these two things were are being fair to others or ourselves. The difference between Thoreau and Winthrop is that Thoreau based his ideas and thought off of his beliefs and thoughts that people should have say in what they want. Thoreau based his reasoning off of biblical information and from what God wanted to help better other people.
Question: Do we sometime support things that we don’t 100% agree with just because we want to avoid a confrontation?
Why don’t we use love in it created manner and let it being people together instead of tearing people apart?
Connection: After reading these articles it made me think about “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” because the some of the white people including the senator don’t agree with some of the laws of slavery but they haven’t done anything about it.

  1. I enjoyed you analysis of both texts. And yes, to your question. Sometimes we find it easier to go along "with the flow" versus doing the opposite if it will cause discomfort or a confrontation.

  2. I agree, I find myself doing that a lot just so I don't have to deal with the consequences.
